IN SUBIACO

A charming village

Walking through the streets of Subiaco means immersing yourself in a place rich in history, tradition and architectural beauty. With its medieval alleyways, charming urban vistas and panoramic position overlooking the valley, Subiaco is one of the most beautiful villages in Lazio, perfect for anyone seeking an authentic experience amid nature and culture. One of its most iconic landmarks is the Ponte di San Francesco, built in 1358, which spans the Aniene River and welcomes visitors with its old-world charm. As you climb towards the historic centre, you’ll come to the Rocca dei Borgia, surrounded by a picturesque maze of houses and narrow streets.

Also worth a visit are the imposing Arco Trionfale, commissioned by Pope Pius VI, and the Borgo degli Opifici, overlooking the river’s left bank: places that tell the story of the city’s past and deep-rooted identity.

Borgo degli Opifici

A historic centre steeped in tradition

Subiaco’s Borgo degli Opifici is one of the town’s most significant places, bearing witness to the artisanal and cultural identity that has shaped the area over the centuries. Once bustling with traditional workshops and local businesses, this medieval quarter still retains the authentic charm of a Subiaco rooted in its heritage. The quarter occupies a strategic position between Piazza Sant’Andrea – home to the Basilica of the same name and the Town Hall – and Piazza Benedetto Tozzi, across an urban landscape where history, architecture and everyday life come together. Beyond the Borgo degli Opifici, visitors to Subiaco can explore other sites of great historical interest, including Piazza Santa Maria della Valle, next to the Rocca dei Borgia, the imposing Arco Trionfale Porta Pio VI, Piazzetta Chiesa di San Pietro and the ancient Piazza Pietra Sprecata, once the heart of the town.

Saint Benedict

between history and nature

The Laghetto di San Benedetto in Subiaco is a crystal-clear pool nestled in the Parco dei Monti Simbruini, fed by a waterfall on the Aniene River and surrounded by lush riverside vegetation. Sunlight filtering through the trees creates an enchanting atmosphere, perfect for a break in nature. The only remaining one of the three artificial lakes commissioned by Nero, the pool can be reached via trail ST2, starting from the ruins of his villa or from the Monastero di Santa Scolastica. It’s also an ideal stop for hikers following routes such as the Cammino di San Benedetto, the CNP, the Sentiero Coleman or the Cammino delle Abbazie.
